Grey hair can be covered in two ways: full coverage with colour (from €43) for an even shade, or grey blending with highlights/babylights (from €80) that weave the grey into your colour and make the root far less visible. At Ikonomakis Hair Atelier in Chalandri, Athens, we choose the route together at your consultation, based on how much grey you have, your natural colour and how often you want to come in. ✦In depth

Everything about this service.

How is grey hair covered in Athens — full coverage or grey blending? There are two routes: full coverage with colour, which makes grey disappear and gives an even shade, and grey blending, which "melts" the grey into fine highlights or babylights so the root shows less. At Ikonomakis Hair Atelier in Chalandri, Athens, colour starts from €43 and highlights for grey blending from €80, with a consultation before every decision.

Full grey coverage with colour: who it suits

Full coverage is the right choice when you want your grey not to show at all. Colour is applied at the root — and through the lengths where needed — in a shade close to your natural colour or slightly warmer, so the result looks natural rather than "flat".

It particularly suits:

  • those with a little or scattered grey who want a clean, uniform colour,
  • dark and brown hair, where grey shows strongly,
  • those who prefer a steady, predictable root routine.

The main drawback is the regrowth line: because the contrast between coloured lengths and a grey root is sharp, the root needs regular refreshing.

Grey blending: when grey becomes light

Grey blending does not hide grey — it makes use of it. With fine highlights or babylights in shades such as beige, honey or cream blonde, the grey "ties in" with the rest of your colour and the growing root does not form a hard line. It is often combined with a gloss or toner that unifies the tones.

It is one of the strongest trends of the moment, because it gives:

  • a brighter, more youthful result around the face,
  • less frequent appointments compared with full coverage,
  • a gentler transition if you are thinking of eventually going naturally grey.

It works best on light brown to blonde hair, or for those who already have quite a lot of grey. On very dark hair it is achievable, but it needs careful planning so the lightening does not bring out orange tones.

Full coverage or grey blending? A comparison

| | Full coverage (colour) | Grey blending (highlights/babylights) | |---|---|---| | Result | Uniform colour, grey invisible | Multi-dimensional colour, grey woven in | | Root line | Visible as it grows | Soft, less visible | | Refresh | Usually every 4–6 weeks | Usually less often | | Price at the atelier | From €43 | Highlights from €80 | | Ideal for | A little grey, dark hair | Lots of grey, transition to grey |

Transitioning to your natural grey

If you want to stop colouring, grey blending is the most elegant "halfway house". Instead of letting the root grow out abruptly against dark lengths, we gradually lighten the lengths with fine highlights so the difference shrinks at every appointment. With each haircut, the old coloured length is trimmed away little by little. How long the transition takes depends on the length of your hair and how dark your previous colour was, which is why we plan it at your consultation.

How often you need a root touch-up

With full coverage, the root is usually refreshed every 4–6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how strong the contrast is. With grey blending, appointments are usually less frequent, because the root "disappears" into the light of the highlights. In between, a gloss or toner refreshes the tone without needing new lightening.

A practical rule: the closer your natural colour is to grey-blonde, the more easily blending "ties in". The darker it is, the more often full coverage — or a combination of the two, root colour with a few fine highlights around the face — gives the most balanced result.

Ammonia-free colour and grey hair

Ammonia-free colour can cover grey, usually when it is at low or medium percentages. On very resistant grey — "glassy" grey that does not absorb colour easily — a different formula or preparation of the hair may be needed. That is why the choice is made at the consultation, looking at the amount and texture of your grey. More on our page about ammonia-free hair colour in Athens.

Yellowing grey hair: the toner solution

White and grey hair turns yellow easily from sun, chlorine, heat from styling tools and minerals in water. A toner or gloss neutralises the yellow tone and brings back a clean, silver or pearl finish. It is one of the simplest and most effective maintenance steps, whether you have full coverage or grey blending. See also our guide to grey hair coverage.

✦FAQ

Everything you want to know.

The questions we are asked most often, answered to help you decide.

How much does grey coverage cost in Athens?

At Ikonomakis Hair Atelier in Chalandri, Athens, colour for full grey coverage starts from €43 and grey blending with highlights from €80. Prices are all-inclusive with a consultation, and the final price depends on the length and amount of hair.

What is grey blending?

Grey blending is a technique that weaves grey hair into your colour instead of hiding it completely. With fine highlights or babylights and often a toner, the grey ties in with the rest of the colour and the growing root shows much less.

How often should I colour my roots to cover grey?

With full coverage, the root usually needs refreshing every 4–6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how strong the contrast is. With grey blending, appointments are usually less frequent, because regrowth gets lost among the highlights.

Does ammonia-free colour cover grey hair?

Yes, ammonia-free colour usually covers grey at low or medium percentages. Very resistant grey may need a different formula or preparation, which is assessed at the consultation.

Can I have grey blending on dark hair?

Yes, but it needs careful planning, because dark hair brings out warm, orange tones when lightened. With fine highlights in beige or caramel tones and a toner, the result stays natural. At Ikonomakis Hair Atelier in Chalandri we always assess this at the consultation.

How do I transition to natural grey without a visible root?

The smoothest way is gradual grey blending: we lighten the coloured lengths with fine highlights so the difference with the grey root shrinks at each appointment. With haircuts, the old colour is gradually removed and the transition happens without a harsh line.

Why does grey hair turn yellow, and what can I do?

Grey hair turns yellow from sun, chlorine, heat and minerals in water. A toner or gloss neutralises the yellow tone and restores a clean silver or pearl finish; at home, a shampoo for blonde/grey hair, used in moderation, helps.

Does frequent colouring for grey damage the hair?

Root colour is applied mainly to new growth, so the lengths are not stressed every time. With the right technique, care and a gloss where needed, hair keeps its shine and quality. At Ikonomakis Hair Atelier in Chalandri we adapt the formula to the condition of your hair.
