How to Go Blonde Without Damaging Your Hair
Blonde doesn't damage hair — bad technique does. The guide to safe lightening with bond-building and proper planning.
How to Go Blonde Without Damaging Your Hair
Short answer: You can go blonde without damaging your hair, as long as the lightening is done gradually, with bond-building protection and proper planning. Blonde in itself doesn't ruin hair — rushing, too much bleach in one sitting and a lack of protection do.
"I'm afraid I'll ruin my hair" — it's the most common worry we hear at Ikonomakis Hair Atelier from clients who want to go lighter. The concern is justified, but there is a solution, and it's a scientific one.
Why does lightening stress the hair?
When we lighten hair, the bleach breaks the disulphide bonds (the "structural bridges") inside the hair. The lighter the result, the more bonds are broken. If this is done aggressively — e.g. going from dark brown to platinum in one sitting — the hair loses elasticity, becomes porous and breaks. The key isn't to avoid lightening, but to do it properly.
What is bond-building and why does it change everything?
Bond-builders (such as Olaplex and K18) are technologies that reconnect the bonds broken by bleach as the lightening happens. They are mixed into the formula and protect the internal structure of the hair. The result: we can reach lighter results with significantly less damage. It's the reason "safe blonde" is now a reality, not marketing.
How many sessions does it take to go blonde?
It depends on your starting point:
- From natural light brown/dark blonde: often 1-2 sessions.
- From dark brown: usually 2-3 sessions for a safe platinum/very light blonde.
- From coloured hair/with a colour history: unpredictable — a strand test and a gradual approach are needed.
"Wanting it all today" is the most common cause of damage. A patient approach protects your hair and gives a better, longer-lasting result.
6 rules for safe blonde
- Always have a consultation and a strand test before your first lightening.
- Don't push for platinum in one sitting if you're starting from dark hair.
- Invest in bond-builder treatments between sessions.
- Use a sulfate-free and purple shampoo to keep the tone cool.
- Reduce heat (straightener/hairdryer) and use heat protection.
- A maintenance plan with your colourist for toning and nourishment.

"Blonde isn't a race. It's about managing the health of the hair. I'd rather tell a client 'we need a second appointment' than burn her hair to please her today." — Thodoris Ikonomakis

How often do I need a refresh? Roots every 6-8 weeks; toning more often if you want a cool tone.
