Balayage or Airtouch? How to Choose the Right Technique for Your Hair
Balayage places the lightener freehand with a brush for a soft transition and bright lengths. Airtouch uses airflow to separate the short hairs before application. There is no single best technique for everyone: the choice depends on your base, colour history, hair condition and the result you want.
The question we hear all the time
"Which technique should I go for? Balayage or Airtouch?"
The answer is different for every person — because it depends on your hair type, the result you want and your lifestyle. In this guide we break down both techniques in detail.
What is balayage?
Balayage (from the French for "to sweep") is a hand-painted colouring technique in which colour is applied freely onto the hair — without foils — to create a natural, seamless transition from root to ends.
Balayage at a glance
- Natural, sun-kissed result
- Very versatile — anything from subtle to dramatic
- "Grows out gracefully" — no harsh regrowth line
- Ideal for all hair types
- Lasts 3–4 months before it needs maintenance
What is Airtouch?
Airtouch is a more evolved, advanced technique. The stylist uses airflow (a hairdryer) to "separate" the fine, short hairs from the longer ones before applying the lightener. The result: only the longer hairs are lightened, creating an exceptionally natural, seamless gradient.
Airtouch at a glance
- A more natural, "invisible" result than classic balayage
- Ideal for thick, heavy or dark hair, where balayage can look "heavy"
- Creates a very clean root shadow
- Lasts 5-7 months — longer between appointments
- Takes more time (3-5 hours vs 2.5-4 hours for balayage)
- From €200 — slightly higher because of its technical complexity
How to choose: which technique suits you?
Choose balayage if:
- Your hair is fine or of medium density
- You want more visible brightness / contrast
- You're new to colour and want to try something subtle
- Your hair is already light (blonde or light brown)
- Your budget is around €150-200
Choose Airtouch if:
- Your hair is thick, heavy or very dark — balayage may not "show" enough or may look artificial
- You want the most natural result possible, almost "invisible"
- You want longer intervals between visits
- You don't mind spending a little more time at the atelier
- You're ready to invest a little more (€200+)
The key difference in the result
Want to explain the difference to someone? Here's the simplest way:
- Balayage: Colour goes onto selected strands freehand — wherever the colourist decides.
- Airtouch: The air "decides" which strands get coloured — the finer hairs "fly away" and stay natural, while the thicker ones remain and take the colour. The result is more random, more natural.
Can I have both together?
Yes! Colourists often combine techniques: Airtouch at the root for a natural root shadow and balayage through the mid-lengths and ends for extra brightness. This combination gives excellent results on very thick, dark hair.
And what about babylights?
Babylights are a third option — ultra-fine highlights (1-3mm) that mimic the natural brightness of children's hair. They're ideal for:
- Blonde or light brown hair
- A "multidimensional" result — several levels of brightness
- Anyone who wants subtle highlights without a visible gradient
